The most widely spoken Romance language, both in terms of how many people speak it and in how many countries, Spanish is one of the fastest growing secondary languages in the world, along with French and Chinese Mandarin. With more than 500 million Spanish speakers on the planet, it is now acknowledged as one of the main languages required for businesses and marketers worldwide.
While pronunciation and usage may differ from one geographical area to the next, regional differences are not so great as to make Spanish unintelligible to the majority of speakers. There are slight differences between the many variants of the language, though. For example, in Mexico, “coat” is translated as “chamarra”, while in the rest of Latin America it is translated as “chaqueta” or “casaca.” Another important example used to understand the variants of Spanish is the translation of “computer”. In Spain, it is known as “ordenador”, while in Latin America it is translated as “computadora.”
